If you’ve landed on this page, chances are you’re looking to learn a few things about hand tied extensions or you Googled “Hand Tied Extensions Near Me” with your last ounce of hope. Either way, welcome—you’re in the right place.

At Hair Extensions Inc, we’re a Tampa-based salon (shoutout to Lutz and North Tampa!) that specializes in all kinds of hair extension methods—but hand tied extensions are hands-down one of the most asked-about.

So to save you from hours of TikTok rabbit holes and Reddit threads, I’ve rounded up 17 Mindblowing Facts About Hand Tied Extensions—plus some visual receipts from one of my clients who’s worn hand tied hair in more ways than I can count. You’ll get answers to your top questions, plus a peek at how versatile this method really is.

1. What are hand tied extensions?

Hand tied extensions usually refer to one of two things:

(1) the actual wefts themselves, or (2) the method used to install them.

For this article, we’re focusing on the method—aka how we install them.

The Method (a.k.a. the part everyone asks about):

We start by placing tiny, silicone-lined microbeads along the base of your hair to form a row. Then, using a needle and thread, we hand sew the wefts to the beads. Think of it like a curtain of hair that we place with intention, for a fuller, more seamless result.

It’s lightweight, versatile, and blends like it grew from your scalp. We customize placement based on your natural parting, density, and the overall look you’re going for.

2. What brand are your hair extensions?

We are a hair extensions based salon that owns our entire hair company. We don’t outsource our hair and we don’t give other companies the chance to send us subpar quality. Everything we offer is created for you and your hair. With that being said, our hand tied extensions are 100% European Double Drawn Virgin Hair that we source after we order your hair if it is not in stock.

3. How long does hand tied extensions take to install?

A standard install typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours for a full set—usually around 100 to 150 grams of hair.

The longest I’ve ever spent was 3.5 hours… but in her defense, that woman had a LOT of hair.

(Like, “we both deserve snacks after” levels of hair.)

4. What is the maintenance schedule?

You’ll need to come in for a move-up every 4 to 6 weeks, depending on your grow-out.

This just means I’ll take out the extensions and reinstall them closer to the base of your hair. It keeps everything secure, comfortable, and looking seamless.

5. Are hand tied extensions bad for your hair?

Not if they’re installed and maintained properly.

Hand tied extensions grow out evenly with your natural hair when we sew them onto a beaded row. So when you combine that with coming in for adjustments every 4 to 6 weeks, your hair should be thriving.

There’s no glue, no adhesives, and no bonds involved, which makes this one of the safest extension methods for your hair.

That said… it does require a little structure. Like any extension method, it takes time to get used to a new home routine. But if you stick to the care guide I give you (and actually use the tools I recommend), you’ll be fine.

What you cannot do is get hand tied extensions, disappear for 16 weeks, and then call me saying they “ruined your hair.”

Because at that point… they should be.

Apparently, you’ve chosen the thrill-seeking path, and maybe extensions just aren’t for you.

(Yes, this happens.)

But anyway—look at this glorious photo of my client’s perfect 6-week maintenance. This is what it should look like.

6. How much do hand tied extensions cost?

Pricing for hand tied extensions varies depending on your goals, how much hair you’ll need, and the overall look you’re going for. That said, we believe in clear, honest pricing—no surprises, no gimmicks. We’ve put together a detailed price list that outlines exactly what’s in the overall price including hair, installation, and any available upgrades.

To give you the most accurate quote, we recommend booking a consultation. It gives us a chance to see your natural hair, talk about your vision, and make sure you get exactly what you need—nothing more, nothing less.

7. Do you charge per row?

No, we don’t price by the row. Instead, we base your install price on how much hair we add overall which can average out to an estimate of rows. Most clients fall between 100 to 150 grams of hair, and we’ll customize that amount during your consultation based on your density, length goals, and lifestyle.

This pricing approach keeps things fair because you’re not just getting rows, you’re getting a complete finish that’s built to blend.

8. Can you put hand tied extensions in a ponytail?

Yes—and that’s one of the reasons people love them. We place our hand tied extensions with your lifestyle in mind, meaning you can still pull your hair up into a high ponytail, bun, or clip without worrying about tracks showing.

Below, you’ll see photos of my client rocking her extensions in a sleek high ponytail. (And yes, it’s as secure as it looks.)

9. Are hand tied extensions good for thin hair?

Yes — in fact, they’re one of the best methods for fine or thinning hair. Why? Because hand tied extensions distribute weight across the scalp instead of concentrating it in a few spots. That means no bulky bonds or heavy strain on delicate strands. Instead, you get lightweight fullness that moves naturally and feels like yours.

My long time client (featured on this page and in this video) actually has naturally fine hair that stays soft and airy. It naturally breaks at the ends so hand tied extensions have been her go-to for years. They give her just the right volume without overwhelming her natural texture.

If your hair leans more light than heavy, hand tied extensions might just be the perfect fit.

10. How many rows do I need?

It depends on your hair density, the look you’re going for, and how extra you’re feeling. Most people fall somewhere between 1 and 3 rows.

  • 1 row = subtle volume
  •  2 rows = volume + length
  •  3 rows = “I’m not new to this, I’m true to this.”
  •  4 rows = Viva la glam!
  •  5 rows and up? = “I have to be a Housewife of Tampa at this point.”

During your consultation, I’ll map it all out for you. No need for guesswork.

11. Do hand tied extensions hurt?

As with most hair extension methods, you will feel slight discomfort the first 1-2 days. Taking a simple pain reliever can alleviate any tension you may feel. After a couple days, they loosen and the tightness goes away.

12. How long do hand tied extensions last?

With good care? A solid 9–12 months. We only use high-quality, pure, single donor Remy human hair—none of that off-brand, mystery blend nonsense. Over time, your natural oils, products, and heat styling will do their thing, so eventually you’ll need new hair. But when properly maintained, these wefts will last you almost a full year or longer of fabulous.

13. How do you remove hand tied extensions?

Please—do not try to DIY this in your bathroom mirror with a pair of scissors and a dream. You should always remove Hand tied extensions should always be removed by a professional (hi, me). We know how to safely unloop, unthread, and remove everything without damaging your natural hair.

14. Do you blend the extensions so that they look natural?

Yes. Always. I don’t let anyone walk out of here with “shelf hair.” All installs include precision blending and layering so the extensions flow seamlessly into your natural hair. The goal is: “Your hair looks amazing,” not, “Omg are those extensions?”

15. How do I sleep with hand tied extensions?

Sleep is when your body resets—and your hair gets sneaky. If you go to bed with your extensions wild and free, you’ll wake up looking like you wrestled a bird’s nest.

Here’s how to keep things smooth and stress-free overnight:

– Brush gently from ends to roots before bed

– Secure hair in a loose braid (or two)

– Use a satin bonnet or sleep on a silk pillowcase

– Never, ever sleep with wet hair—your scalp (and wefts) will hate you for it

16. Can you feel hand tied extensions?

Yep—but only for the first few days. They’ll feel snug at the base until they “settle in.” After that, you’ll probably forget they’re there. Until you catch a glimpse of yourself and think, “Damn, my hair looks good.”

17. How do I style hand tied extensions?

However you want! These wefts are heat-friendly and blend like a dream, so you can curl, braid, flat iron, blow out, or put them in a top knot without worry.

I’ve had clients that will style their hair into sleek ponytails, festival buns, half-up styles—you name it. My client even had a long feed-in braid added with her extensions in for a festival. Wild? Yes. Gorgeous? Also yes. Take a look!
