Traditional Sew In
Also known as a Natural Sew In or Basic Sew In Weave, we braid majority of the hair down with about 15% of your natural hair left out to cover the tracks. We then sew a weaving net to your base to give a firm, even foundation to sew. Our high quality human virgin hair is then secured onto the base with needle and thread. After the hair is installed, it is blended into your natural hair, layered, and styled one of four ways. We leave the hair in it’s natural state, make it bone straight, give you beachy waves or beautiful romance curls.
Benefits of A Traditional Sew In
Keeps your natural hair protected and tucked away
Encourages healthy growth with proper maintenance
Gives the illusion of your own part for a more natural look
Allows you to reuse your extensions for multiple installs
Who are traditional sew ins for?
This method is ideal for beginners or anyone who prefers a low-maintenance, easy-to-style look. If you’re not ready for the full commitment of a closure or frontal, this is your sweet spot. It’s the “jeans and white tee” of the weave world—timeless, reliable, and always flattering.
What Type of Hair Should You Use?
For the best results, we recommend pure virgin Remy hair—specifically, our Luxe Virgin Hair or HD Virgin Hair collections. Both can last a year or longer with proper care. If you love experimenting with color, these lines can be lifted, lightened, or custom-toned to your ideal shade. Visit our store to browse all available options for your next install.
How Many Bundles Do You Need?
18” or shorter: 2–3 bundles
20”–24”: 3–4 bundles (depending on your desired fullness)
26” or longer: 4–6 bundles for maximum volume
Because everyone’s head shape and hair density are different, we’ll guide you toward the right amount during your consultation—no guesswork needed.
How Long Does a Traditional Sew-In Take?
A basic sew-in with three bundles typically takes about 2–3 hours from start to finish. We don’t rush art. (Or in this case, precision stitching.) Additional bundles or specialty styling may extend your appointment slightly.
How Long Do Traditional Sew-Ins Last?
On average, your traditional sew-in will last 6–8 weeks with proper at-home care and bi-weekly maintenance appointments. Tightening is usually needed around week four, especially once you have about a finger’s width of new growth.
Traditional Sew-In FYI
Risks
A properly done traditional sew-in won’t damage your hair. However, neglecting your maintenance, overusing heat, or scratching too aggressively can lead to breakage, irritation, or tension spots. Finer hair types may experience extra stress at the track area if installs are left in too long—so don’t skip your check-ins.
Side Effects
A little tightness or mild headache the first day is completely normal—it just means your braids are fresh. A quick pain reliever before your appointment (and before bed that night) usually takes care of it.
Maintenance
To keep your natural sew-in looking its best, schedule maintenance every two weeks, with tightening around week four. Remember, tightening simply re-sews your tracks for extra support—it won’t feel as snug as a brand-new install. For that “fresh sew-in” feeling, a full reinstall is always best.
Removal
When it’s time to say goodbye (for now), we handle the removal process with care. We gently take out your extensions, unbraid your base, and detangle your natural hair—no snags, no tears, just a clean slate for your next look. [Click here to review our removal process.]
